One activity Mrs. Kitto does to engage learners is competition with themselves. She gives each student a passage with 3-4 paragraphs and she will give the students a certain time to complete the first two paragraphs and wherever they end up when the time is done they have to circle the word they left off on. She make them read it again for the same time limit so they can try and read further than the word they left off last time. They move to the next "level" which is to read the whole passage in the amount of time limit she gives them. This activity really helps the students get involved because it is always fun to compete against yourself and beat your record. It was so fun to see the kids beating their record and feeling good about something school related. Another activity she does are called response cards.
